Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise residing on the island of Saint Helena, has officially become the world’s oldest living land animal. At an astounding age of 194 years, he is recognized by Guinness World Records as a symbol of resilience and longevity.

This remarkable tortoise, scientifically known as Aldabrachelys gigantea, was born around 1832, making him a living witness to nearly two centuries of history. His age was estimated based on historical records, and he arrived on Saint Helena in 1882 as a gift from the Seychelles. Since then, Jonathan has called the grounds of the governor’s residence at Plantation House his home, quietly observing the world change around him from the late Victorian era to today’s digital age.

Despite his advanced age, Jonathan remains a well-cared-for and active creature. Although he has lost most of his sense of smell and eyesight, caretakers say he still enjoys his favorite foods, including lettuce, cucumber, carrots, apples, and bananas. His well-being is maintained by local veterinarians and conservation staff, who ensure he lives comfortably.

Scientists have long studied giant tortoises for their extraordinary longevity. Their slow metabolism, protective shells, and evolutionary adaptations contribute to their unusually long lifespans. Jonathan’s age makes him a valuable subject for research into aging, animal physiology, and longevity.

While many Seychelles giant tortoises live over 100 years and some reach 150 or more under ideal conditions, Jonathan’s nearly two-century lifespan is exceptional—even among his species. His longevity is a rare case, emphasizing how unique his life truly is.

Beyond his biological significance, Jonathan is a global icon. He holds the record for the oldest living chelonian—the group that includes turtles, tortoises, and terrapins—and was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in 2022 when he turned 190. As he approaches his 200th year, the gentle giant continues to fascinate scientists and the public alike, offering a rare living link to a world nearly two centuries in the past.
