Galatasaray edged ahead of Liverpool in their Champions League last-16 clash, thanks to an early goal from Mario Lemina, leaving the Reds with an uphill battle ahead of the second leg. While Liverpool remain optimistic about their chances at Anfield, the first-leg performance highlighted some concerns for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm in Istanbul, with Galatasaray’s dynamic play and raucous home crowd making life difficult. The Turkish team, despite a shaky start, grew into the game, with their quick counters and set-piece threats proving dangerous. Lemina’s goal, scored from a Victor Osimhen header off a corner, gave Galatasaray a crucial advantage.

Liverpool’s defense was tested early on, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili making several key saves in place of injured Alisson. The visitors also had a goal disallowed after a VAR review, which deemed Ibrahima Konaté’s shot off a corner to be offside or potentially fouled, adding to their frustration.

The match was marred by an uneven refereeing performance, with Galatasaray’s aggressive approach often going unpunished. Liverpool’s coach Arne Slot acknowledged the intimidating atmosphere created by the passionate home crowd, which was amplified by the iconic Ali Sami Yen stadium’s imposing structure and fervent supporters.

Liverpool’s attacking attempts were sporadic, and they failed to capitalize on some promising moments in the final stages, but the Turkish side’s resilience and tactical discipline kept them ahead. Galatasaray’s counterattacks, especially down the flanks, proved effective, with Osimhen once again showcasing his all-around striking ability.

The result leaves Liverpool with work to do in the second leg at Anfield, where they will face a hostile environment. As Slot noted, “One goal may not be enough,” and the Reds will need to improve their composure and execution to overturn the deficit.

Despite the setback, Liverpool remain confident that their Champions League journey is far from over, but they must address defensive vulnerabilities and seize their chances more efficiently if they hope to advance further.
