Joseph Kent, the head of the United States’ National Counterterrorism Center, has officially resigned amid growing controversy over the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. In his resignation letter, Kent expressed his belief that Iran does not pose an “imminent threat” to the United States and criticized Israeli pressure and misinformation campaigns that he says influenced former President Donald Trump to initiate military action.
Kent, a combat veteran with 11 deployments and a Gold Star husband, stated that he could no longer support what he described as a “war manufactured by Israel” that he believes offers no benefit to the American people. He emphasized that the conflict has already resulted in significant loss of life and resource expenditure, warning that further escalation could lead to chaos.
Claims of Deception and Foreign Influence
In his letter, Kent alleged that senior Israeli officials and influential members of the U.S. media engaged in a misinformation campaign to mislead President Trump into believing Iran posed an immediate threat. He compared current events to the 2003 Iraq War, asserting that similar tactics of deception were used to push the U.S. into that conflict.
Kent criticized the “echo chamber” that he claims contributed to Trump’s misperception, leading to support for military action based on false premises. He argued that Trump was misled by Israeli officials and U.S. media, which created a narrative of imminent danger for political gain.
Call for Reassessment
Kent urged the president to reconsider the decision to continue the war, warning that the U.S. risks further decline and chaos if it persists down this path. He appealed for a new direction, emphasizing that the decision to escalate conflicts should be made with careful reflection and integrity.
Casualties and Impact
The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,300 Iranians, over 880 Lebanese, and 12 Israelis. The U.S. military reports 13 American service members killed and approximately 200 wounded. Kent’s resignation marks the first major departure from the Trump administration over the Iran war, highlighting internal dissent and concerns about the true motivations behind the conflict.
