As anticipation builds for the upcoming release of Dhurandhar 2, singer Hasan Jahangir has revealed details about the use of his iconic song in the film. The stage is set, and fans are eagerly awaiting the first show, with expectations running high.
In a recent appearance on ARY Digital’s Ramadan program Shan-e-Sahoor, hosted by Nida Yasir, Jahangir disclosed that he was paid $50,000 (approximately Rs 46 lakh) for the use of his 40-year-old hit song Hawa Hawa in the film’s first installment, which is believed to be the blockbuster Dhurandhar.
When asked whether he received compensation for the song’s inclusion, Jahangir confirmed, “Ji hain, makers ne mujhe $50,000 diye. Paise bhi diye aur permission bhi li (Yes, they paid me and also obtained permission to use the song).”
He further addressed copyright concerns, stating that earlier, there was no formal copyright system, but now, anyone wishing to use his songs must seek permission and pay accordingly. Jahangir explained, “Pehle copyright system nahi tha. But abhi jo bhi mere gaane use karta hai, woh pehle permission leta hai aur paise bhi deta hai. ‘Hawa Hawa’ 40 saal pehle aaya tha. Maine usko 1986 mein record kiya tha aur 1987 mein launch kiya tha (Earlier, there was no copyright system. But now, anyone who wants to use my songs must get permission and pay. ‘Hawa Hawa’ was released 40 years ago. I recorded it in 1986, and it was launched in 1987).”
The song, which is based on the 1970s Persian track Havar Havar by Kourosh Yaghmaei, begins with the line “Hawa Hawa Ai Hawa Khushbu Loota De” (“Air, oh Air, Swell the fragrance”). Jahangir noted that the song’s catchy beats appeal to diverse audiences worldwide, even if they don’t understand the language.
Dhurandhar 2, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, is scheduled to release in theaters on March 19, with paid previews across the country tomorrow. The first installment became the highest-grossing film in a solo language, establishing high expectations for the sequel.
