The Pentagon is preparing to send thousands of soldiers from the elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move comes amid heightened military activity in the region, even as the Trump administration continues diplomatic efforts with Iran.
The officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, did not specify the exact locations within the Middle East or the timeline for the troop movements. The soldiers are currently stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

While no decision has been made to deploy troops directly into Iran, sources indicate that the buildup aims to enhance the United States’ capacity for potential future operations in the region.
This deployment follows last week’s deployment of thousands of Marines and sailors aboard the USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, along with its Marine Expeditionary Unit and accompanying warships.
The developments come just a day after President Donald Trump postponed previous threats to target Iranian power plants, citing “productive” talks with Iran as the reason for the delay.
