In the midst of a fierce electoral battle in Tamil Nadu, DMK’s sitting MLA Inigo S Irudayaraj has taken a stand against actor-turned-politician Vijay, who is contesting from Trichy East — a key DMK stronghold.

Vijay, the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), plans to file nominations from both Trichy East and Perambur in Chennai—both constituencies currently held by DMK, signaling his ambitions to challenge the ruling party on multiple fronts.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Irudayaraj dismissed concerns over Vijay’s entry into the fray. “I am not in panic. I am the real hero in my constituency, not a reel hero,” he declared, emphasizing his grassroots work and connection with voters over cinematic fame.

A prominent industrialist and founder of the Christian Goodwill Movement, Irudayaraj secured victory in the 2021 Assembly elections from Trichy East with a margin of over 53,000 votes. He highlighted his efforts in helping more than 3,000 people obtain house pattas and using his entire Rs 45 lakh MLA salary to support underprivileged students. His outreach to minority communities remains a key part of his campaign.

Addressing fears that Vijay’s Christian identity might divide minority votes, Irudayaraj asserted, “Christians will support DMK. M K Stalin protects Christians.” He also criticized Vijay for not being active in church or speaking out against attacks on Christian churches, implying a lack of genuine commitment.

Irudayaraj questioned Vijay’s political stance, suggesting that despite claiming to oppose the BJP, the actor has not been openly critical of the ruling national party, casting doubt on his political authenticity.

On Vijay’s popularity among youth and minority groups, Irudayaraj acknowledged the actor’s broad appeal but believed it would not necessarily translate into votes. “Youngsters from all faiths are with Vijay now, but they will understand later. There is no survey to suggest only a minority of youth support him,” he said.

He also responded to criticism over rising crimes against women, emphasizing that Tamil Nadu has taken swift action against offenders and enhanced safety measures, asserting that such incidents are not unique to the state.

While acknowledging Vijay’s mass appeal, Irudayaraj downplayed its significance in the electoral context. “He is a great actor, no doubt. People gather to see him,” he stated.

The importance of the contest was underscored when Chief Minister M K Stalin personally introduced Irudayaraj and other DMK candidates, walking alongside them in a show of strength and confidence ahead of the high-stakes election in Trichy East, where political groundwork meets the star power of cinema.
