In a significant development, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, held a high-level meeting with Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in New Delhi on Thursday, emphasizing a renewed focus on defense collaboration between the two neighboring nations. This meeting marks a strategic shift in bilateral ties, following the recent assumption of office by Bangladesh’s new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Hamidullah shared on social media that he had a productive discussion with General Dwivedi, reflecting on strengthening Bangladesh-India relations, particularly in defense cooperation. The encounter is seen as a critical step toward restoring and enhancing collaboration after a period of strain.

The renewed engagement comes after a period of tension during the previous government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, which saw increased influence from Pakistan’s military and provocative comments that strained bilateral relations. Since Rahman’s government adopted a “Bangladesh First” policy, both countries have begun to rebuild trust and cooperation, especially in regional security matters concerning the BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) region and the Indian Ocean.

Prime Minister Rahman has also distanced Bangladesh from Islamabad, condemning Pakistan’s military actions during the 1971 Liberation War, notably on Bangladesh’s Genocide Day, March 25.

Additionally, India and Bangladesh are collaborating on maritime and energy security initiatives. Dhaka’s participation in the ongoing IOS SAGAR exercise, launched from the Mumbai Naval Dockyard, underscores their shared regional security interests. Both nations are working to address maritime and energy challenges, especially amid regional conflicts such as the ongoing West Asia war, which has implications for regional stability under India’s Neighbourhood First and SAGAR policies.

This development signals a positive trajectory in India-Bangladesh relations, emphasizing regional security cooperation and strategic partnership.
