The assassination of Iran’s influential political figure, Ali Larijani, has plunged the Islamic Republic into a more uncertain and complex phase, impacting decision-making amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

The strike, carried out in a US-Israeli operation on Tuesday, targeted Larijani, a prominent powerbroker and former top security official. The incident has intensified tensions and prompted Iran to reassess its strategic options as the war in the region persists.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed revenge for Larijani’s killing. In a statement, he condemned the act as a terror attack by enemies of Islam, warning that “every drop of blood has a price” and asserting that justice will be served. Khamenei described Larijani as a “learned, far-sighted, and intelligent” individual, emphasizing his significance and criticizing Western hostility.

Khamenei also warned anti-Islamist forces, stating that shedding the blood of martyrs only strengthens the Islamic system and that those responsible will soon pay the price. He extended condolences to Larijani’s family, underscoring the personal toll of the loss.

Larijani’s death marks a significant blow to Iran’s political and security landscape. Known for his opposition to the hereditary succession of Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader—an issue that strained his relationship with the Khamenei family—Larijani was once close to Iran’s current leadership. He served as head of Iran’s state TV and radio and acted as a key political advisor under Ayatollah Khamenei.

Since Iran’s nuclear program became a major concern for the West, Larijani assumed the role of Iran’s top nuclear negotiator in 2005, positioning him at the forefront of the country’s security policy.

The incident comes amid an ongoing US-Israeli campaign targeting Iran’s leadership, which has included the elimination of several senior officials. Iran has pledged to retaliate, with Army Chief Amir Hatami warning that Tehran’s response will be both “decisive and regrettable.”

As Iran grapples with this new chapter of uncertainty, analysts warn that the killing further narrows Tehran’s strategic options as regional tensions continue to escalate.
