Indian Railways has revealed the fare structure and reservation policies for the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, marking a significant shift in long-distance overnight train travel.

In a move that underscores its premium positioning, the Indian Railways has introduced the Vande Bharat Sleeper service specifically designed for overnight journeys spanning several hundred kilometers. Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair-car services used mainly for short to medium routes, this new sleeper version features higher fares and a notable departure from traditional booking practices.

Key Highlights:

  • Fare Structure:
The fares are based on a minimum chargeable distance of 400 km, even if the actual travel distance is shorter.
  • AC 3-Tier: ₹2.4 per km → Minimum fare ₹960 (excluding GST)
  • AC 2-Tier: ₹3.1 per km → Minimum fare ₹1,240 (excluding GST)
  • AC First Class: ₹3.8 per km → Minimum fare ₹1,520 (excluding GST)
  • Pricing Details:
The fares will increase with distance traveled and are expected to be higher than Rajdhani Express fares on longer routes, emphasizing the premium service.
  • Reservation Policy:
A major change is the elimination of RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) and waiting lists. Tickets will be sold only as fully confirmed berths, ensuring certainty for passengers. All berths will be released on the first day of the booking window, with limited quotas for senior citizens, women, persons with disabilities, and duty pass holders.
  • Booking and Refunds:
Only fully reimbursable passes, warrants, or equivalent instruments will be accepted for booking. Concessional or non-reimbursable tickets and passes will not be valid. Digital payments are encouraged, with refunds processable within 24 hours of cancellation for online transactions.
  • Passenger Amenities and Design:
The fully air-conditioned train will feature AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier berths, with modern amenities such as automatic sliding doors, advanced safety systems, individual reading lights, charging points, and improved suspension for a smoother ride. The trainsets are capable of speeds up to 180 kmph, though operational speeds are expected around 130 kmph.
  • Operational Routes:
The maiden Vande Bharat Sleeper service is planned between Howrah (Kolkata) and Kamakhya (Guwahati), covering nearly 1,000 km. The service aims to reduce travel time on this overnight corridor.

Future Plans:

Indian Railways intends to roll out more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains on other long-distance routes in phases, depending on manufacturing timelines and operational readiness. Unlike traditional overnight trains that rely on RAC and waiting lists, the Vande Bharat Sleeper treats each berth as a fixed, premium inventory, prioritizing speed, comfort, and booking certainty.

This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing overnight rail travel in India, offering passengers a reliable, comfortable, and premium travel experience.
