The Tata Punch has become a bestseller in the Indian automotive market, prompting competitors to revisit and update their offerings. Hyundai is among the manufacturers preparing to introduce a refreshed SUV to challenge Tata’s popular model. The upcoming Hyundai Exter facelift has recently been spotted testing on Indian roads, signaling its imminent arrival.
Design and Exterior Updates
Despite heavy camouflage, the test mule of the Hyundai Exter facelift reveals that the vehicle maintains its characteristic boxy stance, similar to the current model. Spy shots suggest that the overall silhouette remains unchanged. The front grille and bumper are concealed, but minor updates are expected, along with new alloy wheel designs and fresh color options. The headlight and taillight configurations appear to stay consistent with the current model, hinting at subtle design tweaks rather than a complete overhaul.
Feature Enhancements and Cabin Refresh
The current Exter offers features such as an electric sunroof, cruise control, wireless charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and an 8-inch infotainment screen. With Tata adding more features to the Punch, Hyundai is expected to upgrade its feature list in the facelift. During a Hyundai investors’ meeting in 2025, the company confirmed plans for an upgraded A+ segment SUV, which currently includes only the Exter.
The new Exter facelift is rumored to feature a larger 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen running the latest Android Auto OS, along with a 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster. It could also include ventilated front seats, reclining rear seats, a powered driver’s seat, a 360-degree camera, and front-rear armrests. Additionally, the cabin is expected to see a refreshed look, enhancing overall comfort and aesthetics.
Powertrain and Mechanical Details
Hyundai plans to retain the current powertrain options in the facelift. The vehicle will continue with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 82 bhp and 114 Nm of torque. Transmission choices are expected to include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. A CNG variant is also anticipated, featuring Hyundai’s twin-cylinder layout to maximize boot space, similar to the outgoing model.
Expected Launch Date and Pricing
The current Exter range starts at Rs 6.79 lakh and extends up to Rs 11.27 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). If Hyundai introduces a comprehensive list of new features in the facelift, a significant price hike of Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 is likely. While Hyundai has not officially announced the launch timeline, industry speculation suggests the Exter facelift could arrive in India by mid-2026, positioning itself strongly against Tata Punch and other competitors in the segment.
