Copper is undergoing a significant transformation in global markets, shifting from a cyclical industrial metal to a strategic asset central to two of the 21st century’s major trends: digitalization and the energy transition. Historically linked to construction and manufacturing cycles, copper is now vital for electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy, data centers, and power grids. With prices frequently exceeding $13,000 per tonne and analysts predicting a long-term supply deficit by 2026, the narrative has moved from oversupply concerns to a focus on potential scarcity.

This evolving landscape has heightened investor interest in copper as a key component of future-focused industries. Wealth expert Advait Arora, founder of Wealth Enrich, emphasizes that copper should now be regarded alongside traditional strategic assets. “If you are interested in copper, think EVs, renewables, infrastructure, and the new gold,” he said, highlighting the metal’s rising importance in global energy and technological sectors.

For investors seeking exposure, Arora recommends three exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that offer diverse avenues into the copper story:

1. Global X Copper Miners ETF (COPX)

COPX is the largest and most established copper ETF, with assets totaling approximately $5.83 billion and an expense ratio of 0.65%. The fund invests in around 40 copper mining companies worldwide, including major players such as Lundin Mining, Southern Copper, Freeport-McMoRan, and Glencore. As of mid-January 2026, COPX’s net asset value stood at $81.94. The ETF has delivered nearly 67% returns over the past year, driven by soaring copper prices and mining equities’ performance.

2. United States Copper Index Fund (CPER)

For investors looking for direct exposure to copper prices rather than mining stocks, CPER tracks copper futures, providing a closer connection to the commodity’s price movements. With net assets of about $456 million, CPER posted a nearly 38% return over the past year, fueled by rising futures prices. However, its higher expense ratio of just over 1% and the inherent volatility of futures-based products make it more suitable for investors with a higher risk tolerance.

3. iShares Copper and Metals Mining ETF (ICOP)

Launched in 2023, ICOP covers a broader metals mining universe, tracking the STOXX Global Copper and Metals Mining Index. It includes global mining giants like Anglo American, BHP Group, and Grupo México. The ETF achieved close to 78% returns in 2025, reflecting strong momentum within the metals and mining sector.

Accessibility for Indian Investors

Indian investors can access these global ETFs through platforms that facilitate overseas investing under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). While this allows diversification into international markets, investors should consider currency risk, expense ratios, and LRS limits. It’s important to note that most of these funds focus on mining companies rather than direct copper prices.

The Outlook and Risks

Despite its long-term growth potential, copper remains a cyclical commodity, not a traditional safe haven like gold. Demand can decline sharply during economic slowdowns, and prices are sensitive to geopolitical developments and policy changes in major producing countries. Additionally, supply constraints persist, with new mines often taking over a decade to develop. This combination of rising structural demand and slow-moving supply makes copper an attractive yet volatile investment opportunity.

As the world accelerates its transition to cleaner energy and digital infrastructure, copper’s role is poised to expand, offering investors a compelling, albeit risky, asset class for the future.
