Just over a week after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed in a joint US-Israeli strike, Iran has appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader. However, the absence of Mojtaba’s public appearances has fueled widespread speculation about his health and status.

Iranian state television referred to Mojtaba as “Jaanbaz of Ramadan,” a term meaning “injured war veteran,” raising questions about whether he was wounded in the ongoing conflict, which Iran describes as the “Ramadan War” against the US and Israel. The state media’s description has added to the buzz, though it did not elaborate further.

Mojtaba, aged 56, was appointed after the assassination of his father on February 28. Known for his close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and his influence over Iran’s key power centers, Mojtaba has long been considered a hardliner. Despite his prominence behind the scenes, he has yet to make a public appearance or issue any statements since his appointment.

Following his elevation, authorities called on Iranians to gather in major squares and streets nationwide to pledge allegiance. Reports indicate large crowds gathered in Tehran, but social media footage also emerged showing some residents reportedly chanting “Death to Mojtaba” from their balconies, according to a BBC report.

Total Silence Fuels Rumors

Mojtaba has maintained a complete media blackout; no photographs, videos, speeches, or public addresses have been released. This silence has led to mounting speculation and rumors regarding his health. Some reports circulating on social media claimed he might have been injured in the conflict, but credible sources remain silent.

U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Mojtaba as “unacceptable” and expressed hope for a leader who could bring harmony to Iran. Meanwhile, Israel labeled Mojtaba as “another tyrant,” emphasizing concerns over Iran’s hardline succession.

Experts and analysts point out that Iranian state TV’s reference to Mojtaba as “Jaanbaz” could be a standard honorific linked to his service during the Iran-Iraq War, rather than an indication of injury. Shanaka Anslem Perera, a Sri Lankan analyst, noted that there’s no credible confirmation of Mojtaba’s health or whether he is unconscious, emphasizing that the claims are likely exaggerated.

Born in September 1969, Mojtaba served briefly in the IRGC during the Iran-Iraq War and has been closely linked to Iran’s military and political elite. His rise to the top leadership amid ongoing tensions with the US and Israel underscores fears among Iran’s adversaries of a continuation of hardline policies, especially regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

As the world watches, the mystery surrounding Mojtaba Khamenei’s health and leadership status remains unresolved, with Iran’s silence fueling ongoing speculation.
