Kim Jong Un presents sniper rifle to daughter Kim Ju Ae, fueling succession speculation

Pyongyang: Kim Jong Un has presented a new-generation sniper rifle to his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, according to state media, intensifying speculation that she is being groomed as the future leader of North Korea.

Images released by KCNA showed Ju Ae aiming and firing the rifle at a shooting range after receiving it during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Workers’ Party of Korea. The rifles were distributed to senior party officials and military commanders to mark a major party event.

Gift to military and party leadership

Kim described the newly developed sniper rifle as a “wonderful weapon” produced by the country’s defence scientists and presented it as a symbol of trust and recognition. Recipients included members of the Central Military Commission, senior officers of the Korean People’s Army, and his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who was identified by state media as director of the party’s General Affairs Department.

Ju Ae’s inclusion among the recipients and her public handling of the weapon has drawn particular attention, as analysts view it as part of her possible leadership preparation.

Rare public appearance raises questions

Ju Ae, believed to be around 13 years old, appeared in public wearing a leather jacket similar to her father’s signature style at official events. Observers say her increasing visibility and symbolic presentation alongside senior officials signal her rising political importance.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has assessed that Ju Ae may already be receiving leadership training and could be playing a growing role in state affairs.

Kim family’s dynastic rule

If Ju Ae eventually assumes power, she would become the fourth-generation leader of the Kim dynasty. The country was founded by Kim Il Sung in 1948, followed by his son Kim Jong-il. Kim Jong Un took power in 2011 after his father’s death.

Kim maintains a highly secretive personal life. His wife, Ri Sol-ju, has largely remained out of the spotlight in recent years, while little is publicly known about their other children.

Succession speculation continues

Before Ju Ae’s public appearances, Kim Yo Jong was widely considered a likely successor due to her influential political role. However, Ju Ae’s increasing visibility at military and political events has shifted attention toward her as a potential future leader, though no official succession announcement has been made.

Analysts say the latest images and ceremonial gestures reinforce the perception that North Korea may be preparing the next generation of leadership within the ruling Kim family.
