Mumbai, January 16 — The results of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections for 2026 have been announced today by the State Election Commission of Maharashtra. The closely-watched polls, held on Thursday across 227 wards, saw the BJP emerge as the leading party, securing victory in 89 wards, while Shiv Sena won 29 seats.

The final ward-wise results were declared on Friday night, marking the conclusion of vote counting. Along with Mumbai, elections were also held for 28 other municipal corporations across Maharashtra, with results expected to be announced later today.

The BMC elections saw participation from 1,729 candidates contesting for 227 seats, amidst a voter turnout involving over 3.48 crore eligible voters. These elections are significant as they are the first civic polls in Maharashtra since 2017 and are considered a high-stakes contest between the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the reunited Thackeray family’s Shiv Sena.

Polling for a total of 2,869 seats across 893 wards in Maharashtra’s civic bodies, including Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, was conducted peacefully without any untoward incidents.

Key Highlights from Ward-wise Results:

  • BJP: Leading with 89 seats, including winners like Tejasvi Ghosalkar (Ward 2), Prakash Derekar (Ward 3), and Jitendra Patel (Ward 10).
  • Shiv Sena: Secured 29 seats, with winners such as Lina Deherkar (Ward 20) and Varsha Tembwalkar (Ward 51).
  • Other Parties: Congress, UBT (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), AIMIM, MNS, and independents also secured multiple seats across various wards.

The detailed ward-wise winners are being updated continuously and can be checked on the official election portal.

Background:
The elections attracted a total of 15,931 candidates vying for 227 seats in Mumbai alone, with voting conducted across all civic bodies in Maharashtra. The results will determine control of the city’s administration, with the BJP and Shiv Sena currently vying for dominance.
