Mumbai: A shocking video from a high-rise apartment building in Mumbai has gone viral on social media, showing a dog aggressively lunging at two young girls inside an elevator. The incident, captured on CCTV, has raised fresh questions about pet safety protocols and security in residential societies across the city.

The footage, believed to be from a building in one of Mumbai’s suburban areas, shows the two girls — appearing to be in their early teens — standing inside the lift when the doors open on a floor. A dog, possibly a pet that had escaped or wandered in, suddenly bursts in and lunges towards them. The girls recoil in fear, one of them visibly panicking as she tries to shield herself. A bystander, apparently the dog’s handler or owner, is seen intervening quickly to pull the animal back.

The clip, which lasts only a few seconds, has triggered widespread outrage and debate online. Many viewers have expressed sympathy for the frightened girls while others questioned how the dog was able to roam freely in common areas of the building without proper restraint.

Residents Demand Action

A resident of the society, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that such incidents highlight the need for stricter rules regarding pets in high-rises. “These buildings are home to hundreds of families with children. Pets are welcome, but there must be responsibility. Lifts and corridors are not play areas for unleashed animals,” the resident said.

Animal lovers, on the other hand, have urged caution against painting all dogs with the same brush. “It could have been a momentary scare. Dogs get excited or anxious in confined spaces like elevators. That doesn’t make them dangerous,” said an animal welfare activist associated with a local NGO.

Local police confirmed they are aware of the circulating video. “We are verifying the exact location and details. If a complaint is filed, appropriate action will be taken under relevant sections,” a senior officer from the area police station said.

Broader Concerns in Urban India

This is not the first time a dog-related scare in a lift has made headlines. Similar incidents in other cities, including Noida, have previously gone viral, often leading to calls for better training of pets and owners.

Experts recommend that societies enforce leash rules in common areas, install pet-friendly signage in elevators, and ensure residents are educated on responsible ownership. Building managements are also being advised to review CCTV protocols and response mechanisms for such events.

As the video continues to spread, parents in the city are once again reminded of the everyday risks in high-density urban living. For the two girls involved, the brief but frightening encounter has likely left a lasting impression. Their families are yet to issue any public statement.

The incident serves as a timely wake-up call for Mumbai’s burgeoning high-rise communities to balance the love for pets with the safety of all residents.
