Mexico Cartel Leader ‘El Mencho’ Killed in Military Operation; Embassy of India in Mexico Issues Advisory
Mexico City: Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho” and the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexican authorities confirmed.
According to official reports, the Mexican army launched a targeted raid in Tapalpa, during which Oseguera Cervantes was wounded. He later succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Mexico City.
Major Blow to CJNG
El Mencho’s death marks one of the most significant successes in Mexico’s ongoing campaign against powerful drug cartels. The operation is being described as a major development in the government’s anti-cartel strategy.
However, the killing triggered swift and violent retaliation across several states. Cartel members reportedly set vehicles ablaze, blocked highways and caused widespread disruption. In cities such as Guadalajara, residents remained indoors amid security concerns, while schools in multiple regions suspended classes.
Casualties and Arrests Reported
Authorities said cartel gunmen attacked security forces in Tapalpa, Zapopan, Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Several security personnel were killed, and a number of troops sustained injuries during the clashes.
Security forces also arrested multiple suspects and seized heavy weaponry, including armoured vehicles and rocket launchers, during and after the operation.
Indian Embassy Issues Advisory
Following the escalation in violence, the Embassy of India in Mexico issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to exercise caution, avoid affected areas and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Officials continue to monitor the situation as security forces maintain heightened vigilance across the region to prevent further unrest.
