India will celebrate its 77th Republic Day on January 26, 2026, with President Droupadi Murmu leading the celebrations from Kartavya Path, New Delhi. Every year, this day marks the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950, transforming India into a sovereign, democratic republic.

Historical Background and Significance
The selection of January 26 as Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the ‘Purna Swaraj’ (Complete Independence) resolution by the Indian National Congress on January 26, 1930. This date symbolizes India’s fight for complete independence from British rule. When the Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, India was officially established as a Sovereign, Democratic, and Secular Republic, with the 42nd Amendment in 1976 adding the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ to its Preamble.

First Republic Day Parade
The inaugural Republic Day parade was held in 1950 at the Irwin Amphitheater, now known as Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. Between 1950 and 1954, the parade venues included Red Fort, National Stadium, Kingsway, and Ramlila Grounds. Since 1955, Rajpath has been the official venue for the grand celebration, showcasing India’s military strength, cultural diversity, and unity.

Celebrations and Events
On Republic Day, schools, colleges, and government buildings hoist the national flag, and the nation comes alive with patriotic fervor through speeches, cultural programs, and quiz competitions. The highlight is the Republic Day parade, featuring military displays, tableaux, and performances. The parade begins with the unfurling of the tricolor, followed by the national anthem, and a 21-gun salute using indigenous artillery, symbolizing respect and honor to the nation.

Interesting Facts About the Constitution of India

  • The Indian Constitution is the world’s longest handwritten constitution, with 395 articles, 22 parts, and 8 schedules.
  • It took nearly 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days to draft.
  • The Constitution was handwritten and calligraphic, created by artists from Shantiniketan under Acharya Nandalal Bose’s guidance.
  • The preamble was inspired by the U.S. Constitution, emphasizing liberty, equality, and fraternity.
  • The Constitution contains ideas borrowed from various countries, including France and the UK.
  • The original copies are preserved in nitrogen-filled chambers in the Parliament Library.

International Presence and Celebrations
On this occasion, President Droupadi Murmu will lead the celebrations, with notable dignitaries such as European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as Chief Guests. The parade also features a 21-gun salute, the highest military honor, delivered by the 1721 Ceremonial Battery of the 172 Field Regiment.

Cultural Shift in Celebrations
The traditional Beating Retreat ceremony now features Indian patriotic songs instead of Western hymns, reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage. The first Republic Day in 1950 saw Indonesia’s President Sukarno as the chief guest, symbolizing India’s emerging global stature.

In essence, Republic Day is more than a parade; it is a celebration of India’s sovereignty, unity, and democratic spirit. It is a day to honor the sacrifices made for independence and to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to its constitutional values.
