Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, addressed recent controversy over his comments concerning the government’s handling of the 2020 China border conflict. Gandhi clarified that his remarks reflected the perspective of former Army Chief, General (Retd) M M Naravane, based on his unpublished memoir.

Gandhi emphasized that his statements were not personal opinions but were derived from Naravane’s account, which he described as containing significant insights into the situation. “This is not me, this is what the Army Chief (former) has written in a book,” Gandhi told reporters, questioning why there appears to be apprehension about the Army Chief’s perspective.

He further accused the government of fearing the revelations in Naravane’s memoir, which, according to Gandhi, shed light on the conduct of the Prime Minister and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. “Why are they so scared of the Army Chief’s perspective? Why are they so scared of what the Army Chief has to say?” Gandhi questioned.

The Congress leader asserted that the book would expose details about how the Army was let down by political leadership during the border stand-off. Excerpts from the memoir, which Gandhi referenced, reportedly contain critical remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

Gandhi claimed that the government was attempting to silence him out of fear that the truth about the 2020 conflict and the leadership’s response would be revealed. “If it comes out, the reality of Narendra Modi and Rajnath Singh will be exposed to the people, and what happened to the 56-inch chest when China was standing against us,” he said.

The remarks have intensified the ongoing debate over transparency and accountability regarding India’s handling of the China border situation.
