United States, Iran Make ‘Significant Progress’ in Nuclear Talks; Next Round to Be Held in Vienna

The United States and Iran concluded their latest round of indirect nuclear negotiations in Geneva after making “significant progress,” with both sides agreeing to continue discussions in Vienna, Oman’s foreign minister said on Thursday. The talks come amid rising military tensions and continued diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme.

The negotiations involved senior officials from both countries, including US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, while Iran was represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi served as mediator, facilitating communication between the two sides. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi was also present in Geneva to engage with both delegations.

Diplomacy Continues Despite Military Pressure

The latest round of talks took place against the backdrop of a major US military build-up in the Middle East, marking the largest American deployment in the region since 2003. The United States has positioned warships, including aircraft carriers such as the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford, as part of efforts to strengthen its strategic presence.

US President Donald Trump reiterated his firm stance against Iran developing nuclear weapons, stating that while diplomacy remained the preferred option, military action remained a possibility if negotiations failed. He warned that the US would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.

Vice President JD Vance also emphasised the administration’s position, saying preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remained a key objective.

Iran Maintains Position on Nuclear Programme

Iranian officials have continued to assert that their nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes and have expressed willingness to pursue a fair and balanced agreement. Tehran has indicated that any deal must respect its sovereignty and national interests while addressing sanctions and security concerns.

Next Round Scheduled in Vienna

Following the latest round of discussions, both sides agreed to continue negotiations in Vienna, signalling cautious optimism despite ongoing disagreements. Key issues under discussion include uranium enrichment limits, sanctions relief, missile programmes, and regional security concerns.

The continuation of talks reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and reach a negotiated settlement, even as tensions remain high across the Middle East.
