“Hostile Environment”: Team Trump Sues Harvard Over Anti-Israeli Protests

The Biden administration intensified its legal action against Harvard University on Friday, filing a lawsuit in Boston federal court seeking to recover billions of dollars over claims that the Ivy League institution has failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students from hostility on campus.
Harvard has been a focal point in President Donald Trump’s broader campaign to push for reforms at major U.S. universities. Trump has criticized these institutions for alleged antisemitic and “radical left” ideologies, often threatening to withhold or rescind federal funding.
The Department of Justice’s complaint alleges that Harvard remains deliberately indifferent to anti-Semitic hostility and has intentionally neglected to enforce campus rules aimed at protecting affected students. The lawsuit states, “This sends a clear message to Harvard’s Jewish and Israeli communities that their safety and equal access are being intentionally disregarded.”
Harvard, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, did not immediately comment on the lawsuit. The university has previously announced measures to combat campus antisemitism, including revisions to disciplinary procedures and expanded training programs
Escalation in Federal Action Against Universities
The lawsuit follows a series of recent actions by the Trump and Biden administrations targeting U.S. universities over issues related to campus hostility and compliance with federal investigations. In June, the administration sought $1 billion from Harvard to settle probes into the university’s policies, after reports indicated the original demand of $200 million had been dropped.
Earlier, in February, Harvard was sued for allegedly failing to comply with federal investigators, with authorities seeking documents to determine if the university illegally considered race in admissions decisions.
Since October 2023, amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, the White House has accused Harvard and other universities—such as Columbia University and UCLA—of turning a blind eye to antisemitism on campus. Columbia settled a $200 million penalty in July, while UCLA faced a demand for $1 billion in August to resolve similar claims.
Legal and Financial Implications
The lawsuit claims Harvard’s alleged indifference violates Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin in federally funded programs. It notes Harvard receives over $2.6 billion in federal funding from the Department of Health and Human Services alone.
Previously, the Biden administration canceled hundreds of Harvard research grants, citing failure to address harassment of Jewish students. Harvard has challenged some of these actions in court, with a Boston judge ruling in September that the government unlawfully terminated over $2 billion in research funding. The judge also blocked efforts to prevent international students from attending Harvard, with the administration appealing both rulings.
