In a recent development, Iran has formally declined a U.S. proposal for a 48-hour ceasefire, according to reports cited by Al Jazeera. The semi-official Fars news agency confirmed Iran’s rejection, signaling a hardening of Tehran’s stance amid escalating regional tensions.

The diplomatic overture was reportedly communicated on Wednesday through an undisclosed intermediary nation. Al Jazeera noted that the name of this middleman has not been revealed in the original sources, which cited back-channel communications.

This diplomatic setback comes in the wake of intensified military hostilities. CNN reports that U.S. forces have successfully rescued a crew member from an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet shot down over Iran. The rescued individual is alive, in U.S. custody, and receiving medical treatment, according to sources familiar with the situation. The whereabouts of a second crew member remain unknown as search and rescue operations continue.

The downed aircraft was confirmed by U.S. officials to be an F-15E Strike Eagle, a dual-role fighter designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Initial reports from multiple outlets, including The Wall Street Journal and Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, indicated the jet was targeted over Iranian territory, with debris and wreckage identified as belonging to an F-15.

Iranian media released images and a map indicating the region where rescue efforts are ongoing, focusing on an area near the Karoon River in Khuzestan Province, approximately 470 km south of Tehran. CNN geolocated footage showing aircraft and helicopters engaged in low-flying operations consistent with air-to-air refueling.

This incident marks the first time during the current conflict that a U.S. aircraft has been shot down over Iran. Despite visual evidence of the wreckage, the U.S. military and White House have yet to issue official statements regarding the pilots or details of the crash. IRIB stated that the “fate of the pilots is currently unclear” as the situation develops.

The ongoing rescue mission continues as tensions remain high between the two nations, with diplomatic efforts seemingly at an impasse.
